Nairobi, 6th July 2025 – We, the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya), strongly condemn the violent attack that took place today, 6th July 2025, at the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) offices.
Video footages of this regrettable act show armed men in hoodies and face masks storming the KHRC premises and beating up the Kenyan Mothers who had gathered peacefully to demand justice for their children lost, abused, or disappeared during the Gen Z protests ahead of tomorrow’s #SabaSabaDay peaceful demonstrations. This unfortunate event represents a cruel and cowardly act targeting innocent women and aiming to silence grieving mothers while instilling fear in all who advocate for human rights.
We also extend our sympathies to the KHRC staff and the journalists who were attacked while performing their duties. No one should be harmed for speaking the truth or covering it.
Today’s events are a painful reminder that gender-based violence, threats, and repression are being used to crush dissent. We stand in full support of KHRC and all human rights defenders who face these attacks with courage and dignity.
FIDA-Kenya calls on the National Police Service (NPS) to act with sobriety, uphold the law, and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice. The right to protest, mourn, and demand accountability is protected by the Constitution of Kenya 2010. It must be respected.
FIDA-Kenya urges every Kenyan not to give in to fear. Justice and truth must prevail over intimidation and violence. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
