Board Courtesy Call on the County Commissioner of Kisumu County 23rd July 2026

FIDA-Kenya Upcountry Representative, Ms Phyllis Chepkemboi, led the secretariat on a courtesy call to Kisumu County Commissioner, Mr. Mohammed Ramadhan Mwabudo on Thursday 23rd July 2026. The meeting focused on the escalating insecurity in Kisumu County and its disproportionate impact on women and girls. FIDA-Kenya presented concerns over rising incidents of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), suspected femicide, gang-related attacks, political violence, and other forms of insecurity that continue to undermine women’s safety, dignity and access to livelihoods.

The discussions also explored opportunities for strengthened collaboration between FIDA-Kenya and the Office of the County Commissioner, including gender-responsive community policing, early warning mechanisms, survivor-centred referral systems, public legal awareness, and improved data sharing. FIDA-Kenya further presented practical recommendations aimed at enhancing security, such as increasing police patrols in crime hotspots, dismantling criminal gangs, improving public infrastructure, strengthening investigations and prosecutions of SGBV and femicide cases, institutionalizing multi-sector security dialogues, and expanding prevention and youth empowerment initiatives to create a safer and more gender-responsive security environment for women and girls in Kisumu County. 

The meeting was also attended by Kisumu County Police Commandant Mr. Hillary Toroitich, and the Kisumu County DCIO Mr Stephen Ambani. The team from FIDA-Kenya included Ms Angela Obadha (Senior Legal Counsel), Ms Lilian Jumba (Client Services Officer), Kemmy Catherine, Brian Tom, and Peres Oduor.
