The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) leadership on Monday held a meeting with Lands Cabinet Secretary Hon. Alice Wahome, E.G.H, in a courtesy call that highlighted the organisation’s Mediation Centre and renewed calls to advance women’s rights and leadership in Kenya.
Led by the Chairperson, Ms. Christine Kungu, the FIDA-Kenya team updated the Cabinet Secretary on the completion of the FIDA-Kenya Mediation Centre purchase. This key project is designed to improve access to justice and offer alternative ways to resolve disputes, especially for women and vulnerable groups.
Ms. Kungu thanked Hon. Alice Wahome for her long-standing support of both national leadership and FIDA-Kenya, mentioning her time as Vice Chairperson from 1999 to 2001. She said the mediation centre has been a long-term goal that is now nearly complete, despite facing several challenges.
Hon. Wahome, who is a senior member of FIDA-Kenya, welcomed the progress and congratulated the current leaders for making real an idea that began during her time at the organisation.
“This is a vision we had years ago, and it is commendable to see it come to fruition,” Hon. Wahome said.
The Cabinet Secretary also encouraged FIDA-Kenya to step up its advocacy for women, girls, and children, and urged the organisation to stay bold when tackling tough social issues. Hon. Wahome looked back on her time in the women’s rights movement and remembered the resistance and criticism that early advocates faced. She pointed out that progress was made through resilience and working together.
“We were called names, but we remained focused. You must continue to work as a team and push the women’s agenda forward,” she said.
She further called on the organisation to support more women in ascending to leadership positions, pointing out that gender inequality remains prevalent despite notable gains.
“Even at the highest levels, gender bias has not ended. Women are still underrepresented, and prejudices persist. Gender balance is yet to be achieved,” Hon. Wahome noted.
She recognised that girls today are more empowered and able to speak up about their issues, but stressed that strong support systems are still needed to sustain this progress.
The meeting also brought together leaders with shared institutional history, including Anne Mululu, SC, Chairperson of the FIDA-Kenya Mediation Centre Committee, who served alongside Hon. Wahome on the organisation’s board between 1999 and 2001.
Other members of the FIDA-Kenya team were Ms. Jane Onyango (Treasurer), Ms. Elizabeth M. Mvoi (Coast Representative), Ms. Sophie Kaibiria (Executive Director), Miriam Bomett (Vice Chair Emeritus ), and Mr. Mark Owuor Otieno (Communication Lead). Hon. Wahome was accompanied by Chief Land Registrar, Mr David Nyandoro.
The engagement signals FIDA-Kenya’s continued efforts to strengthen partnerships with government stakeholders as it advances its mission to promote women’s rights and access to justice in Kenya.
