PRESS STATEMENT: Shocking discovery of six female bodies in a dumpsite in Kware, Embakasi

Nairobi, 12th July 2024 – The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) is deeply shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic discovery of six female bodies at a dumpsite in the Kware area of Embakasi, Nairobi County. From media reports, the bodies, all of which were in varying stages of decomposition, were wrapped in nylons and reinforced with ropes, presenting a gruesome scene that sent shockwaves through the community and beyond.

FIDA-Kenya extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims who are yet to be identified. This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the sexual and gender-based violence and brutality faced by women in Kenya, most ending up as femicide. The discovery of these bodies is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing pattern of violence against women that has been escalating in our country. This incident is unacceptable. Women and girls in Kenya must be assured and guaranteed of their protection and safety.

While the National Police Service has assured the public of investigations into this discovery, we hope this will result in speedy and expedited arrests and prosecution of the perpetrators. The Government of Kenya must leave no stone unturned to ensure these barbaric acts do not go unpunished.

In light of this devastating discovery, FIDA-Kenya will immediately commence its legal and psychosocial support to the affected families and loved ones. We will work tirelessly to gather all relevant information and provide any needed support to the authorities and the affected families. We remain committed to fighting for justice for all women.

We will continue to monitor this matter keenly and update the public accordingly.
