PRESS STATEMENT: FIDA-Kenya Condemns Governor Guyo’s unsubstantiated accusations and derogatory remarks against Senator Hon. Fatuma Dullo

Nairobi, 12th June, 2024 – The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) is appalled by the derogatory remarks made by Hon. Abdi Guyo, the Governor of Isiolo County, against Hon. Fatuma Dullo, the Senator for Isiolo County, in an undated clip circulating online. In the audio clip, the Governor accuses Senator Dullo of badmouthing him in different government offices and asks whether the senator wants to sleep with him three times. The Governor’s derogative language and unsubstantiated accusations against Hon. Dullo are baseless and a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to eradicate such behaviour from modern Kenyan society.

FIDA-Kenya is particularly disheartened that these statements came from an elected public official, Governor Guyo, who is expected to uphold the leadership and integrity requirements of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and set an example of the highest standards of conduct and respect.

FIDA-Kenya reminds Governor Guyo that insults, name-calling, humiliation, degradation, and intimidation and all forms of emotional and psychological abuse against women is gender-based violence (GBV). Governor Guyo’s remarks contribute to a culture of disrespect and abuse against women, which we must collectively condemn and work to eradicate. GBV has no place in Kenya, and it is incumbent upon all leaders to lead by example in promoting respect and equality for both women and men.

FIDA-Kenya therefore demands that Governor Guyo issues a public apology to Senator Dullo, the people of Isiolo, and all Kenyans. The citizens of this country deserve leaders who uphold the values of respect, integrity, and service. As a women’s rights organization, FIDA-Kenya stands in solidarity with Senator Dullo and all women leaders who face unwarranted attacks and calls on all Kenyans to reject such behaviour. Respect for women is not optional but a fundamental principle of a just and equitable Kenya.
