Promoting Women Political participation in Kenya

The note more than two-third gender rule and equal opportunities for women in the elective representation of governance is a cornerstone of FIDA-Kenya advocacy under the Vote a Dada campaign. The campaign seeks to leverage opportunities in law, policy, and institutions and is keen on the outcomes of the General Elections of August 2022.

These elections being the third in the circuit since the promulgation of the progressive Constitution of 2010, is particularly important as a three-way indicator of how women are first, presenting themselves for elections through political party formations secondly, packaging themselves through the media and other public forums and thirdly negotiating for themselves through other political structures. These three indicators have been hailed by FIDA-Kenya’s gender analysis reports in 2013 and 2017 as being one of the ways to propel greater representation and presentation of women in politics.

It is with this background that we held a Strategy Meeting on 19 March 2022, on Women Leadership that involved key stakeholders from the Religious Institutions, Women’s Rights Organizations, select Community Leaders, Corporate Organisations, Women in Politics, the Business Community, Electoral Institutions, the Media, Political Parties, and Security agencies.
