The coordination of the 2023 Annual Report of FIDA-Kenya was a collective effort, overseen by Christabella Barasa, our esteemed Monitoring and Evaluation Lead. We deeply appreciate the significant contributions of the entire FIDA-Kenya staff, whose information, analysis, and documentation have shaped the content of this report. We also express our sincere gratitude to the Governing Council of FIDA-Kenya for their strategic guidance to the Secretariat throughout the year.
For almost four decades, FIDA-Kenya has employed conventional methods to ensure access to justice, including providing legal advice, drafting legal documents, offering representation in court, training clients in self representation, providing psychosocial support, engaging in mediation and alternative justice systems (AKS), and undertaking Strategic Impact Litigation (SIL). In 2023, 8,268 clients received free legal advice through our digital platforms and walk-in consultations, resulting in 70 secured judgements under legal representation. Additionally, 947 clients were trained on self-representation, leading to 92 secured judgements, and 563 cases were resolved through mediation.
In pursuing justice for indigent women and girls, FIDA-Kenya maintained strong partnerships with pro-bono lawyers who played a crucial role in bridging the justice gap faced by marginalized clients and victims of human rights abuses. In collaboration with these pro bono lawyers, FIDA-Kenya assisted indigent women and girls in articulating their legal needs and finding appropriate channels for addressing reported human rights violations. 238 cases were referred to pro bono lawyers , resulting in 76 secured judgements.
