FIDA KENYA PRESS STATEMENT CONDEMNING VIOLENCE DURING THE ONGOING ANTI- IEBC DEMONSTRATIONS- 17TH MAY,2016

FIDA Kenya is appalled by the brutality meted upon the women during the ongoing Anti- IEBC demonstrations that happened yesterday. FIDA Kenya strongly condemns the use of excessive force by the police.

As an organization, we also believe that the police have the means and are able to control the public and/or arrest the demonstrators without the use of excessive force. What the country witnessed yesterday is both puzzling and inexcusable. The use of excessive force by the police is a violation of human rights.

We are shocked that male officers invaded and attacked the women who were seeking shelter in the public women`s toilets which is a continuous confirmation that women are used as tools of war or conflict. This move offends our national values as enshrined in the Constitution, the right to privacy and right to be treated with dignity. The Constitution outlines that every person has inherent dignity and the right to have that dignity respected and protected.

FIDA Kenya further calls upon the Government to ensure that the police who were involved are punished. FIDA Kenya retaliates that police brutality has no place in the current Constitutional dispensation.
