FIDA Kenya's Access to Justice team uses the following strategies to fulfill its mission of promoting women's individual and collective power to claim their rights in all spheres of life:
Mediation; the concept has been embraced by both disenfranchised and empowered men and women as the process is free, swift and it gives room for flexible solutions and settlements between parties in conflict. Mediation at FIDA Kenya has on one hand, aided in resolving and restoring relationships/marriages. A case in point is whereby one of our clients re-united with the husband after going through the process at FIDA. In her words through a follow-up she stated that; ‘I am very happy…the relationship is looking up and my husband is implementing what was discussed during the therapy session at FIDA’. Mediation has on the other hand, helped in settling land matters out of court. One of our clients sued two persons for fraudulently selling property to her. Mediation between the 3 parties was successfully conducted at FIDA and an out of court agreement was reached.
On legal representation, the highlight for the year thus far is where an accused was charged with murder and attempted murder after he set a house with our client and their child ablaze. The child did not survive but the mother escaped with severe burns. The accused was found guilty as charged on both counts; he was thus convicted to life imprisonment on the first count and 10 years imprisonment on the 2nd charge. The accused appealed but the same was dismissed by a 3 judge bench.
